Full Description/Transcription:
A most original and important Native Canadian artist, Norval Morrisseau was the first to paint the ancient myths and legends of the eastern woodlands. Born out of Sandpoint Reserve near Beardmore, Ontario, Morrisseau spent his youth in remote isolation developing a unique artistic ability. As the sole originator of the woodlands style, he has become the inspiration to many up and coming artists. Morrisseau was raised by his grandfather who introduced him to Ojibwe shamanism and told him stories and legends. He produced images to illustrate these stories. His work now hangs in all the most prestigious museums in Canada and around the world. He has received an honorary degree from the Royal Academy of Arts and is a member of the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honour.
